The Redcliffe renovations are bringing a fresh new look to our beloved seaside hotel, blending classic charm with modern elegance. As part of the Tudor Hotel Collection, we are committed to enhancing our guest experience while preserving the character that makes The Redcliffe Hotel so special.

The Proposals

Add a new parapet with detailed castellations to match the existing rotunda.

Reinstate onion detail to the top of the existing castellated tower.

New window openings and surround to replicated Smiths style and detailing.

Reinstate detailed towers and onion to the corners of the North and South wings.

Repairs and remedial works to fa ades and windows and detailing.

All windows replaced with new timber framed sash windows with matching timber beading.

New plaster detailing around windows to link to Smiths style and noting the difference in character between the seafront wings and the west wing.

New external pillar detailing and finials to replicate Smiths style and details on the originally designed garden wing.

New mansard roof linking the West wing together and housing the relocated plant from the rooftop with dormer windows to match the existing adjacent roof.

New parapet detailing.

The Redcliffe Hotel is a Grade II Listed building that sits on the seafront of Paignton Sands.

The building was originally designed by Robert Smith and completed in 1864. The designs incorporated a mix of Indian, Italian and Gothic architectural styles, drawing on Smith’s life experience living and working as an engineer on buildings in Europe and India.

The building has since been developed and extended numerous times. It was first opened as a hotel in 1902.

The majority of the original wings no longer exist with the exception of the North wing which is largely encompassed by 20th Century additions. There is an opportunity to emphasise the existing rotunda, which is the most significant part of the building that remains with much of it’s original detailing internally and externally.

The is also an opportunity to highlight many of the original and significant features of the landscaping, which iterate Smith’s original intentions for the site.
